Is Organizing in your Self-Care Toolbox?

As an organizer, people call on me when they need to make a change. I love this about my job. I get to enter into people’s lives at a turning point. It might be a move, a divorce, or just a feeling that they need to take action to change the direction of their lives. It’s a beautiful and unique thing to be let into someone’s life when they are feeling vulnerable.

Last month, I went through a change myself. A good change, but change always rattles us, even if it’s something we want to happen. I was feeling overwhelmed and confused, and had a lot of anxious energy. One evening I felt called to meditate and seek guidance about this. I grabbed my Moon Deck (I couldn’t call myself my mother’s daughter if I didn’t dabble in some magic now and then) and spread the cards out on the floor. I plopped a couple of crystals down on top of them, sat down cross-legged, and commenced with the deep breathing.

I’m fairly new to this form of meditation and have largely been relying on intuition to get into it, so I was following my feeling in terms of form. I immediately felt ‘dropped in.’ I’m not sure how else to describe it. I began to feel a pink mist growing inside of me. I leaned into it. I’ve learned that when I start receiving images, I’m going in a beneficial direction. I continued breathing until it filled my whole body, through my chest and into my head, supporting and holding me. I reached down and chose a card. It read:

‘I trust the change unfolding in my life.’

Yes! My body flooded with support. This change is a good thing! There’s a little guidebook that comes with the Moon Deck containing meditations and spiritual practices that correspond to each card. I opened the book to the ‘Trust’ page, and low and behold, the spiritual practice it suggests is organizing! I laughed out loud!

This is exactly what I know to be true about organizing. It pairs a physical act (decluttering) with an emotional release for a powerful dose of deep, permanent change.

Taking this suggestion at face value, I got to it. I run a tight ship so there wasn’t much to declutter, but I found 2 books and one small bag of felt ornaments that I no longer felt supported me. I thanked them, donated the books to my local library and the ornaments to Salvation Army.

Organizing is a powerful self care tool to have in your tool box. When you feel anxious or unsure about change, engage with your environment. When we declutter our space, we affirm our beliefs and boundaries and set the expectations for how we treat ourselves and how we want to be treated by the Universe. Organizing helps us process our emotions in a healthy way, and move forward wiser and stronger.

You are complete. You are whole. You contain multitudes.

Be well,

Raleigh
