The beginning of something amazing.

New beginnings, fresh starts, resolutions and goals, I love them all!

How much do you want to exercise? How often are you going to call your mom? How are you going to improve at work? Tangible goals. Checklists, measurements.

Once upon a time I was extremely into the quantifiable. Now, not so much. This might surprise some of you. A professional organizer certainly screams type A personality, and when I work with clients, I absolutely ask them what their goals are for their homes. But instead of the concrete and tangible, I want to ask about how you want to feel.

Close your eyes. See your front door in front of you. You’ve just come home from a normal day at work. You reach out your hand and unlock your front door, it opens before you.

What feeling do you want when you step through your door?

Safety

Calm

Refreshed

Protected

Welcomed

These are all feeling words I’ve heard from clients for what they want out of the thresholds of their homes.

And a feeling goal like this is where to start when organizing.

Do you want a place to keep your shoes? Sure. A place for your keys? Definitely. But those concrete goals have to be secondary after the feeling goal. Because the feeling goal is deep. Deep enough to inspire you to take action. Your need to have a key ring might not carry you all the way to the store to get one, but if you connect into your deep need of wanting a home that welcomes you and your loved ones, your need for community, for safety, that can get you up out of your seat. And that can serve as your north star when you’re in the weeds with it, asking yourself ‘do I, or do I not want this third pair of old-ish running shoes??’ They still fit, not too beat up, cost 70 bucks--but do they make you feel refreshed and welcomed? Nope. Thank you third pair of old-ish running shoes for the lessons you have taught me and the miles you have taken me. Goodbye, sir!

For 2019, I invite you all to ask yourselves: How do I want to feel in my bedroom? How do I want to feel in my kitchen? How do I want to feel in my living room?.

The answer may just inspire you to tidy up!

Leave me a comment and let me know your feeling goals. I would love to send good thoughts your way, and of course, come and help you achieve them!
